- Administration provided employment for out-of-work Americans, mostly on manual
- labor projects. Part of this larger WPA effort was the Federal Writers' Project.
- At its peak, the project employed 6,500 men and women, at the subsistence wage
- of $20 a week. Participants included such later-celebrated writers as Saul
- Bellow, John Cheever, Zora Neale Hurston, and Richard Wright. Find out more
